Discover the spectacular mountain wilderness of Hunza on the Ultar Meadow Day Hike, an adventurous full-day trekking experience starting from the historic town of Karimabad. Nestled beneath the towering peaks of the Karakoram Range, this hike takes you away from the traditional settlements and terraced fields of Hunza into a dramatic landscape of steep mountain walls, rugged trails, alpine pastures and breathtaking high-altitude scenery.
The adventure begins in Karimabad, where you will meet your local trekking guide and prepare for the journey into Ultar Valley. Leaving the town behind, you will follow a mountain trail that gradually climbs through the rugged terrain of Ultar Nala. As you gain elevation, the scenery changes from cultivated slopes and traditional Hunza pathways to rocky mountain passages, narrow gorges and increasingly impressive views of the surrounding peaks.
The route provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Karakoram at close range while learning about the region’s mountain environment, traditional way of life and seasonal use of high-altitude pastures. Along the way, you can pause at suitable viewpoints to photograph Karimabad, the Hunza Valley and the dramatic mountain scenery surrounding the Ultar massif. The combination of challenging uphill walking and spectacular landscapes makes this hike especially rewarding for nature enthusiasts, photographers and travellers looking for an active experience beyond the usual sightseeing routes.
As you continue towards Ultar Meadow, the landscape opens into a quieter alpine environment where seasonal grasslands and shepherd shelters may be encountered, depending on the season and local conditions. The meadow area offers a peaceful setting to rest, enjoy a packed lunch and appreciate the immense scale of the surrounding mountains. On clear days, you may have views of the striking peaks of the Ultar massif, including Ultar Sar and Ladyfinger Peak, although visibility depends on weather and the precise viewpoint reached.
Unlike a technical mountaineering expedition, this itinerary focuses on a guided day hike towards the meadow area, allowing you to experience the mountain landscape without attempting to climb the surrounding peaks. Nevertheless, the trail is steep and physically demanding in places, so a reasonable level of fitness, suitable footwear and a steady walking pace are essential. Your guide will select the appropriate route and turnaround point according to the group’s ability, weather conditions and trail accessibility.
After spending time enjoying the mountain scenery, you will retrace your steps towards Karimabad, descending through the rugged gorge and mountain pathways. The return journey provides further opportunities for photography and a final appreciation of Hunza’s remarkable landscapes. By late afternoon, you will arrive back in Karimabad, bringing your day of adventure to a close.
The Ultar Meadow Day Hike is an excellent choice for travellers who want to combine physical activity, natural beauty and cultural discovery during their stay in Hunza. Whether you are an experienced hiker or an active traveller seeking a memorable mountain adventure, this experience offers a rewarding way to explore the wilder side of Karimabad with the support of a knowledgeable local guide.
Please note: The exact hiking distance, elevation gain, duration and access to Ultar Meadow depend on the trail conditions and the starting point used. This tour does not include an ascent of Ultar Sar or an unrestricted approach to the glacier. The itinerary may be adjusted for safety according to weather, snow, rockfall risk and local guidance.
Karimabad, Hunza
Begin the day with an early breakfast at your hotel in Karimabad. Meet your local trekking guide, check your hiking equipment and fill your water bottles before setting off.
Your guide will brief you on the route, expected weather, steep sections and turnaround time. Carry packed snacks and a lunch, as food availability at the meadow is seasonal.
Walk through the upper lanes of Karimabad towards Baltit Fort and the beginning of the Ultar Valley trail.
Enjoy views of the traditional Hunza settlement, terraced fields and the surrounding mountain landscape. The route leaves the main village and enters a more rugged environment as you approach the gorge.
Start the main climb along the footpath into Ultar Nala. The trail rises steeply from Karimabad, passing rocky slopes, narrow passages and sections near the traditional irrigation channel.
The landscape gradually becomes wilder as the gorge narrows and the surrounding mountain walls grow more imposing. Walk at a steady pace, take short breaks when needed and follow your guide carefully on loose or exposed ground.
Pause at a safe, guide-approved location to catch your breath, drink water and photograph the surrounding landscape.
From suitable viewpoints along the ascent, you may enjoy elevated views over Hunza Valley, Karimabad and the rugged mountain terrain leading towards the upper valley.
Your guide can explain the local geography and point out visible peaks, including the distinctive Ultar mountain group when visibility permits.
Continue the steady climb towards the alpine pastures above Karimabad. This section can be particularly demanding because of the gradient, uneven footing and accumulated fatigue.
As the terrain opens up, look for seasonal grassland and shepherd shelters around the meadow area. The upper landscape offers a striking contrast to the cultivated terraces and settlements below.
The exact arrival time depends on the group’s fitness, trail conditions, stops and the point from which the hike begins. Allow around 3–5 hours for the uphill journey, with additional time if conditions are difficult.
Upon reaching the meadow, take time to rest and appreciate the spectacular surroundings beneath the Ultar massif.
On a clear day, the landscape may offer views of Ultar Sar, Ladyfinger Peak and the surrounding high mountain walls. The meadow is a natural place to relax after the steep ascent and experience the quieter side of Hunza.
Spend time taking photographs, enjoying the scenery and learning about the seasonal use of the pastures by local herders.
Important: Remain within the established safe area. Do not continue towards glacier terrain, unstable slopes or higher ridges without appropriate local guidance and a separate assessment of conditions.
Enjoy a packed lunch at a suitable sheltered spot, keeping a safe distance from unstable slopes and any active rockfall areas.
Take a longer rest, replenish fluids and prepare for the return journey. If a seasonal hut is operating, basic refreshments may be available, but visitors should not rely on it.
Keep all food packaging and waste in your daypack and leave the meadow clean.
After lunch and a final look at the mountain scenery, start retracing your steps down the same trail.
The descent may feel easier cardiovascularly, but steep and loose ground can make it challenging for the knees and ankles. Move carefully, use trekking poles if available and avoid rushing, especially through narrow or exposed sections.
Your guide should adjust the pace to the slowest member of the group and allow additional breaks when required.
Arrive back in Karimabad, depending on your walking pace and trail conditions. After completing the hike, return to your hotel for refreshments and relaxation.
If time and energy permit, enjoy a relaxed evening in the bazaar or have tea at a local café overlooking Hunza Valley.
End of the Ultar Meadow day hike.
