Tour Details

The trip to Baskochi Meadows is a wonderful combination of mountain hiking, panoramic viewpoints and the natural beauty of Upper Hunza. Situated above the spectacular turquoise waters of Attabad Lake, Baskochi offers an elevated perspective of the lake, the surrounding mountain walls and the impressive peaks of the Karakoram.

Starting from Karimabad, this day trip follows the scenic Karakoram Highway north towards Shishkat and the Attabad Lake tunnel corridor. From the roadside trailhead, a short but steep uphill hike leads to Baskochi’s grassy viewpoint, where visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the lake and, on clear days, the iconic Passu Cones. The hike is generally manageable for travellers with reasonable fitness, although the steep, sometimes loose path requires care. Allow approximately 45–90 minutes for the ascent, with additional time for the descent, rest stops and photography.

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to experience the mountains without committing to a multi-day trek. The excursion can also be combined with boating on Attabad Lake, a lakeside lunch and scenic stops along the Karakoram Highway, making it an excellent full-day experience for visitors exploring Hunza.

Important information for travellers

Fitness and difficulty: The hike is short but steep. Travellers should be comfortable walking uphill over uneven terrain. It may not be suitable for anyone with mobility limitations or difficulty managing steep slopes.

What to bring: Wear sturdy walking shoes with good grip, carry drinking water and snacks, and bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a light jacket. The exposed trail can become hot in direct sunlight, while conditions may change quickly.

Best time to visit: June to early October is generally a favourable period, depending on weather and trail conditions. Summer offers greener slopes, while autumn can bring golden colours and clear mountain views.

Safety: Follow your guide’s instructions, avoid unstable edges and do not attempt the hike in unsafe weather. Confirm current trail access and road conditions before departure.

Suggested tour duration: One full day from Karimabad, with the hike and an optional Attabad Lake visit.

Itinerary

Detailed itinerary

08:00 AM – Breakfast and departure from Karimabad

Begin your day with breakfast at your hotel in Karimabad. Meet your driver and guide, check your daypack and prepare for the scenic journey towards Upper Hunza.

After departure, travel north along the famous Karakoram Highway, passing traditional settlements, cultivated slopes and dramatic mountain scenery. Your guide can introduce the geography and history of the Hunza region while explaining the day’s activities.

09:00 AM – Scenic drive to Attabad Lake

Continue towards Attabad Lake, approximately 30 km from Karimabad, with the drive commonly taking around an hour depending on traffic and stops.

The lake was formed in January 2010 following a major landslide that blocked the Hunza River. Today, its vivid turquoise waters, steep surrounding cliffs and winding highway make it one of the region’s most distinctive landscapes.

Pause at a safe, designated viewpoint for photographs and enjoy the contrast between the blue-green lake and the rugged mountains. Continue through the tunnel corridor towards the Baskochi trailhead near Shishkat.

10:00 AM – Arrival at the Baskochi trailhead

Arrive at the roadside starting point in the Attabad tunnel corridor, near Shishkat village. Confirm the current access point with your local guide, as the exact stopping place can vary with road and trail conditions.

Before starting the hike, take a few minutes to stretch, adjust your footwear, apply sunscreen and drink water. Your guide will explain the route, the estimated walking time and the safest places to stop for photographs.

The trail climbs directly uphill from the road, so begin slowly and allow your body to adjust to the sustained ascent. The path may be rocky, dusty or loose in places, with limited shade along the exposed slope.

10:15 AM – Hike towards Baskochi Meadows

Begin the ascent towards Baskochi Top, following the established footpath with your guide. Although the route is relatively short, the continuous uphill gradient can make the hike more demanding than its distance suggests.

As you climb, the views of Attabad Lake gradually expand below you. The road, tunnels and surrounding cliffs become increasingly impressive from above, creating excellent opportunities for landscape photography.

Take short breaks when needed and maintain a comfortable pace. Avoid loose shortcuts across the slope, and keep a safe distance from steep edges.

Expected ascent: Approximately 45–90 minutes for many walkers, potentially longer for groups that prefer a slower pace.

11:15 AM – Reach Baskochi Meadows and panoramic viewpoint

Reach the upper meadow and viewpoint area, where the landscape opens up to reveal a spectacular panorama of Attabad Lake and the surrounding Karakoram mountains.

From this elevated vantage point, enjoy views of the lake stretching between towering rock faces, with the Karakoram Highway tracing the shoreline below. On clear days, the distinctive Passu Cones and other prominent peaks of Upper Hunza may be visible in the distance.

Spend time exploring the accessible grassy area, taking photographs and enjoying the peaceful mountain atmosphere. Your guide can help identify visible peaks and suitable photography locations.

12:00 PM – Relaxation, photography and packed lunch

Spend additional time at the viewpoint enjoying the scenery and having a light packed lunch or snacks.

This is an excellent opportunity to rest after the uphill walk, capture panoramic photographs and appreciate the scale of the mountains surrounding Attabad Lake. If the weather is clear, allow time for wide-angle landscape photography as well as photographs of the lake’s changing colours.

Keep the meadow clean, take all rubbish back with you and avoid disturbing grazing animals or local vegetation. Before beginning the descent, check the weather and confirm the return route with your guide.

12:45 PM – Descend to the Karakoram Highway

Begin the return walk along the same established trail. The descent is generally quicker than the ascent, but loose gravel and steep sections require careful footing.

Walk slowly, use trekking poles if available and avoid running or rushing over unstable ground. Your guide will help the group maintain a safe pace and identify suitable places to pause.

Once you reach the roadside, take a short rest and rejoin your vehicle for the next part of the excursion.

01:30 PM – Attabad Lake visit and optional boating

Drive to a suitable lakeside access point to experience Attabad Lake from a different perspective.

Depending on the weather, operating conditions and available services, you may choose to take an optional boat ride across the turquoise water. From the lake, the surrounding cliffs appear even more imposing, and the contrast between the water and the barren mountain slopes makes for memorable photographs.

Alternatively, enjoy a relaxed walk along an accessible section of the lakeshore, visit a viewpoint or simply spend time admiring the scenery.

Note: Boating is optional, subject to availability, weather and local safety instructions. The activity and any associated fees should be confirmed on the day.

02:30 PM – Lunch at a local restaurant

Enjoy lunch at a suitable restaurant around the Attabad Lake area or along the return route, depending on opening hours and availability.

Travellers can choose from locally available Pakistani dishes, traditional Hunza specialities or lighter refreshments. This is also a good opportunity to relax after the hike and enjoy the mountain surroundings before continuing towards Karimabad.

Lunch can alternatively be arranged as a packed meal to provide greater flexibility for private groups.

03:30 PM – Scenic return journey towards Karimabad

Begin the return drive along the Karakoram Highway, passing the dramatic landscape around Attabad Lake and the traditional settlements of Upper Hunza.

Depending on the group’s interests and the available time, your driver may make a brief stop at a safe roadside viewpoint for additional photographs. Enjoy the changing perspectives of the lake and surrounding mountains as you travel back towards central Hunza.

04:30–05:00 PM – Arrival in Karimabad

Arrive back at your hotel or a designated drop-off point in Karimabad, bringing your Baskochi Meadows day trip to an end.

If you still have time and energy, you may explore the local bazaar, browse traditional handicrafts and dried fruit shops, or enjoy tea while reflecting on the day’s mountain adventure.

End of tour.
